Since when I care about hazing?

Just recently I saw a CCTV footage about an incident happened in a certain condo in Manila, Philippines where a group of men dragging a boy along the hallway going to the elevator, from which allegedly came from hazing rite of a certain fraternity group which I won't name in this blog! The boy was identified and his name is Guillo Cesar Servando, a sophomore student from De La Salle College of St. Benilde. Servando was severely hurt with bruises and lifeless.

Wikipedia defines hazing as "a practice of rituals involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group."

It is a practice long time ago, a tradition that up to now some or mostly groups, fraternities or sororities follow. It is a beginning to what they called "brotherhood", but when does hurting, abusing, or humiliating someone be the start of a relationship as brothers? It is a paradox to the word BROTHERHOOD. Fraternity is a form of brotherhood where members of the group share one common goal and to be part of that group you must undergo series of steps, one of which is HAZING...

Hazing for me is somewhat a sort of a welcome to an aspiring member to the frat, but does it really need to be that brutal and end up killing a person? Is it a must to hurt a person just to be accepted in a certain group or frat?  To the men behind the initiation rites really need to do that? Perhaps this footage caught my attention, but this tragic event is not new to us. We have Marlon Villanueva from University of the Philippines, who was killed during the initiation rites in a resort and a lot of other frat related violence that remain unsolved until now . This physical injury and death of someone due to hazing is already common here in the Philippines since the teeth of law about hazing is not that strong though the new  "anti-hazing " law is already non bailable but men behind the initiation still doing the same ritual and somehow resulted to death. Its a cycle and must be stop.

How can we end this practice? So lets point some fingers. If only administrations of colleges and universities are serious with their campaign to stop fraternities being form in schools. hazing will be stop, the mere fact that recruitment start at school, the institution has the jurisdiction to eliminate these practices. To the law enforcer body let the people responsible to  this be behind bars regardless on what the status of their families to the society or whatsoever. Lastly to the parents whose sons/daughters are in school let your role as parents be the guide to your children. Survey says that the very first reason why students are willing to enter and be a member of frat is that they seek love and belongingness, so your LOVE to your children are essential to your sons/daughters.Their should be a strong support system to each members of the family so that the child won't feel that she/he is alone and will divert in seeking comfort to other people.

And on a final note, I know for sure that this frat related violence will no be the last, there will be another Servando who will experience hazing or the worst part DEATH.  I personally don't know the family of Guillo Cesar, but I am with them in search of JUSTICE and I am for "No to frat related violence"
